Raven's demon side has the same birthday as Beast Boy, so the Titans go to the world of Azarath to celebrate her sinister sixteen.
Plot[]
It's once again Beast Boy's birthday, and he and his friends are having a rooftop dance party. However, Trigon makes an ominous entrance through his portal, and it turns out Raven shares her demon side's birthday with Beast Boy! With her demon side turning 16,000 years old, her dad is planning to throw her a Sinister Sixteen party. Raven isn't too keen on this idea, as such parties are notorious for turning teenage girls into horribly spoiled monsters. But the Titans don't believe her explanation and think it's about time for them to celebrate her birthday. Trigon also pleads her to join, claiming that this party is important to every young demon; plus, she'll get a Azarathian birthday cake that actually makes wishes come true. The four other Titans are enticed, especially Beast Boy, who also gets to make a wish. Finally, Raven agrees to go.
The Titans and Trigon then enter Thorpighor's party bus to Azarath, though Raven doesn't really enjoy the ride. On the bus, she's asks Beast Boy what he's going to wish for. Robin suggests a leg press machine that can strengthen their glutes, Starfire hopes he gets an exotic cat, and Cyborg proposes him to wish for a team vacation to Mypos. But Beast Boy's set on wishing for a red bicycle (actually a tricycle), like the one someone stole from him as a child. His friends think his wish is garbage, but he scolds them.
Eventually, the party bus arrives, crash landing in the suburbs of Azarath. Raven's temper immediately flares when Trigon decides to change her usual outfit into a pink puffy dress. Furious, she demands him to change the dress's color from pink, then to purple, and then finally black. Fortunately, Beast Boy is able to calm her Raven down by complimenting her.
However, things only go from bad to worse when Trigon brings them into the yard to meet the guests. The Titans are introduced to Raven's grandmother Nana, who is overly doting to Raven, but angered at Trigon for forgetting Espom salts for her swollen feet. Raven's brothers Russ, Lyle and Suge begin kissing her feet at Starfire happily joins in. The rest later meet Uncle Grim, who kills Robin but submits to Nana who demands him to reverse Robin's death. Trigon then forces Raven to have a daddy-daughter dance in front of the guests, which only embarrasses and triggers her. Although Starfire tries to cool her down, Beast Boy only worsens the matter by becoming a turkey and dancing with Trigon. Meanwhile, Cyborg and Nana have a fun time grooving,, and Grim once again gets scolded by Nana after he kills Robin for trying to take his dance with Starfire.
It's time for Raven to unwrap her presents, but she unfortunately hates them all. She dumps the cloak Grim gave to her, and even though Cyborg tries to tell her it's the thought that counts, Raven still rips Nana and Trigon's blanket to shreds. Trigon tries to placate her by turning one of the guests into a Pegasus, but she's still furious and completely annihilates the demon-turned-Pegasus. At this rate, the Titans realize that Raven is going to explode at any minute, but they decide to hold out for the magical wish ceremony.
Unfortunately, horror strikes when the birthday cake wish part finally begins—Raven, enraged to the point of irrationality, wishes that she can destroy everything and by transforming into an egregious monster. She begins mindlessly destroying her surroundings and soon devours the guests and her family. Trigon is actually rather glad that he gets eaten, as this was his plan from the start. The only way to reverse the destruction is for Beast Boy to sacrifice his own wish. At first, he's reluctant to give up on his bicycle, but after seeing Robin, Starfire, and Cyborg consumed by Raven, he has no other choice; Beast Boy blows off the candle of his cake...
Thankfully, Beast Boy's wish works—the party's events are undone, and the Titans are back on the Tower roof. Raven apologizes to the team for her monstrous actions, and specifically to Beast Boy, having made him forgo his wish. However, it turns out that undoing the events wasn't his only wish, as apparently he also wished for Robin to be his tricycle, much to Robin's chagrin. Raven, Starfire and Cyborg can only watch in confusion as Beast Boy rides Robin into the night sky in the fashion of ET.
This is the third time Beast Boy shares a birthday with someone. The first time was with Starfire in "BBSFBDAY!" and the second time was with Robin in "BBRBDAY".
This episode reveals that Raven hates the color pink.
This is the first "BBRAE"-focused episode to not highlight Raven and Beast Boy's relationship.
In the original ending, Starfire, Cyborg, and Raven leave to get some more birthday cake after watching Beast Boy ride Robin into the sky. This part was likely removed due to time constraints.[1]
This episode reveals Trigon's full name is "Trigontholomew".
Continuity[]
Raven is seen unhooded for the 121st time in the series.
The party bus horn is a reference to the "MLG airhorn" meme.
While riding the party bus, Cyborg suggests that Beast Boy should wish for a trip to Mypos, the fictional island home of the character Balki from the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers.
Beast Boy's story about his stolen childhood bicycle is a reference to the 1985 movie Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
When riding away on the Robin bike at the end of the episode, Beast Boy flies into the air and in front of the moon, possibly referencing the 1982 movie E.T..
The birthday word sinister sixteen is almost the pun of Marvel Villains team Sinister Six led by Doctor Octopus.
Errors[]
This episode reveals that Raven and Beast Boy have the same birthday, but this seemingly noteworthy fact has not been brought up in any of the other episodes centering around Beast Boy's birthday.
This is possibly because it is specifically Raven's demon side's birthday, but how one individual can have two different birthdays is unclear.
Since Beast Boy manages to save everyone, and turn Robin into his birthday bike, he technically made two wishes on his birthday candle, instead of just one.
This episode reveals that Raven hates the color pink. However, Sparkleface, one of the main characters of Raven’s favorite show Pretty Pretty Pegasus, is pink.
Running Gags[]
Beast Boy referring to his three-wheeled tricycle as a 'bicycle'.
Raven losing her cool whenever she doesn't like what Trigon gives her.
Robin getting killed and subsequently brought back to life by Uncle Grim.
