The episode starts off with the Halloween Spirit coming out of nowhere. He makes decorations by just moving his fingers. He doesn't get the final laugh when somebody kidnaps the spooky Spirit in a small bottle, ruining the decorations.
While the Teen Titans get ready for the holiday, all the decorations are ruined. Beast Boy slaps and blames Robin for buying cheap decorations, Raven finds out that the candy has melted. Robin thinks the Spirit is lost, so Raven attempts to summon the Halloween Spirit, but it fails. Raven says if she don't find him, the holiday will be gone permanently. Starfire and Cyborg gasp. Beast Boy flips Raven's book of legends book, then a piece of paper flies out. Cyborg reads the paper, saying "Betelgeuse" three times.
The room rumbles like a jumping elephant. The Titans' elevator goes wonky, then it becomes a thinner but taller shape just as the door opened. Betelgeuse arrives, then laughs. He shakes Raven's hand, pats Cyborg and makes Beast Boy stare in his eyes. He puts a snake on Robins hand. Betelgeuse is hungry, so he eats Silkie. Obviously protective of the larva, Starfire forces the dead man to spit Silkie out, and Betelgeuse barfs and farts. Cyborg and BB laugh, so Betelgeuse makes a scary face.
Raven says his name, so Betelgeuse tells Raven to take it easy. Raven asks the ghost to find the spirit, but Robin thinks he'll double-cross the Titans, so the ghost convinces the team to trust him. He knows the location of the lost Spirit and its in the Netherworld, Cyborg thinks it's simple, so he tells Beetlejuice to take them there, but he says he has no way in, so the Titans have no choice but to say his name. Betelgeuse agrees, so he draws a chalk door which goes to the nether world. The ghost jumps in but the Titans can't, to which Betelgeuse explains they need to die first, so he kills them.
The Titans enter the Netherworld, where they see big bugs connected like a train. While on their journey, the ghost shows the tourist attractions of the netherworld before they hit a dead end. The bug train falls on sharp deadly spikes, so the train changes to a butterfly and it flies off, but crashes into a cliff-wall. The Titans and Betelgeuse fall to the floor. Raven becomes angry, but happy when its visible from a naked eye.
This episode began Cartoon Network's Treat-a-Thon, which ran through all October.
Continuity[]
The Halloween Spirit from "Halloween" and "Halloween v Christmas" returns in this episode, but he is now currently in his gourd form, and now resides in Jump City.
He additionally doesn't speak like in his other appearances.
The Titans previously met Beetlejuice in the LEGO Dimensions special episode, "Team Building" as part of the Teen Titans Go! level pack.
After Beast Boy says "Beetlejuice", he asks if they think his face is funny (which scares them) and asks if they like it, similar to how Beetlejuice scares Adam and Barbara after Adam asks if he can be scary.
The note which the Titans use to summon Betelgeuse is almost identical to the ad Adam and Barbara found when they first considered summoning Betelgesue - except this time it’s advertising something that’s not “a bio exorcist”.
The Titans and Betelgeuse sing Harry Belafonte's Banana Boat Song (Day O), which was sung at a fancy dinner in a scene in the film, and the song is also in the musical.
Sandworms appear twice.
The "deadbeat" ghosts Betelgeuse complains about were a recently-deceased married couple, Adam and Barbara Maitland, from the film.
The elevator door looks similar to the one that opened up during the wedding scene to let in the “minister” who was supposed to marry Betelgeuse and Lydia when Betelgeuse enters the tower.
When Betelgeuse said he's a very busy ghost, he said that he is doing a show on Broadway (which references the musical based on the film), going on a trip to Hawaii (which references Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, a script for a possible sequel which never made it into production), and got engaged to Winona Ryder, who played Lydia Deetz in the film.
Betelgeuse briefly manifests Lydia alongside him while in the tower, with both in their wedding outfits, likely referencing the film as well as his comment about now being engaged to Winona Ryder.
Trigon is seen reading the Handbook for the Recently Deceased.
Betelgeuse clasps Raven's mouth with a metal plate to prevent the latter from uttering his name, similar to how he did to Barbara in the movie.
Trigon shrinks Betelgeuse's head at the end of the episode for not paying his debt, which is what happened to him at the end of the movie when he switched numbers with a witch doctor while waiting in line.
There are also references to the Beetlejuice animated series.
Betelgeuse refers to the place the Titans visit as the "Netherworld" instead of the Afterlife (its name in the film), much like in the animated series.
The Netherworld resembles its depiction in the the animated series.
The "tour" of the Netherworld is similar to the very pun-filled style of the show.
Betelgeuse's shoes have a curly elf shoe-like shape, much like in the animated series.
Errors[]
Betelgeuse clearly kills the Teen Titans in one scene, but at the end of the episode when the Titans return to the mortal world, they're somehow alive again.
In the original Beetlejuice film, the Maitland couple had no ghostly features despite being dead. This is likely the case with the Titans.
Running Gags[]
Betelgeuse trying to get the Titans to not say his name.
Robin having an ugly face.
