"Kickin' It" is issue #56 in the Teen Titans Go! comic series.

Synopsis[]

"Robin's got some chores to do, and the rest of the team will need some super-hero mentoring!"

Plot[]

Loud knocking disturbs Robin's solitude in his room, and he orders the curious Titans to begone. Convinced that he's hiding candy, the team bursts through the door, only to find that Robin is polishing Batman's Batarangs. The heroes mock him for being a lowly sidekick, but Robin defends his position, preferring to call himself a "superhero's partner." It's not easy, he claims, and so the four Titans set out to become sidekicks themselves...

General Immortus has just stricken down most of the Doom Patrol in Codsville, but two heroes remain—Robotman and his sidekick Cyborg, "the 'Bot Wonder." Just as the mechanical man is about to punch Immortus, Cyborg berates him for threatening to hit an old guy. So Robotman slaps his head off instead. Meanwhile, Robin is relaxing with his Batarangs.

In Cliffland, New Jersey, The Spectre has just come down on a bunch of low-life criminals. He's about to inflict his wrathful vengeance upon them, but Raven manages to scare them off. Needless to say, The Spectre is annoyed at his new sidekick. A new partnership with Beast Boy is going decently, though, for Vixen, who's taking down Cheetah and Cat-Man in NYC. Things go south, however, when Beast Boy reveals his mentor's less than secret identity to the villains...

Kickin' It (Starfire)

Mean What'cha Say, Star.

While all these battles are going on, Robin continues his polishing endeavor, with not a care in the world (except Batarangs). Across the universe in the Cygnus Galaxy, Starfire has joined forces with the bounty hunter Lobo in terrorizing a local bar. Suddenly, she gives the mercenary a vicious kick to the leg. Apparently, Starfire thinks that being a "sidekick" means kicking Lobo in the side. First she painted a girly face on his jacket, and now Starfire keeps kicking him... not a great apprenticeship for Lobo.

Back at the Tower, Robin finishes off the last Batarang just as the Titans enter his room, visually depressed. They now see that being a good sidekick is extremely difficult—their mentors have just shown up to get some vengeance. Robin is glad to see they've experienced how being a sidekick—correction, superhero partner—is hard yet honorable... especially since he unveils a new logo for the Titans being HIS sidekicks!

References[]

Kickin' It (Cat-Man)

Cat-Man in the comic.

  • In Robin's room, there is a penguin doll with a rocket launcher strapped to its back, a common weapon of the Penguin.
  • At one point, Raven mentions having a butler to polish Batarangs, a reference to Alfred.
  • The Brain is mentioned indirectly by Cyborg, and Beast Boy also shouts out B'wana Beast in this issue.

Errors[]

  • The comic shows a location called the Cygnus Galaxy, when in past DC comics, it was just a system, not an entire galaxy.[2]

Running Gags[]

  • Superheroes/mercenaries continuously turn down the Teen Titans.
  • Scenes of Robin relaxing while polishing Batarangs are shown throughout.
